Iran on Security Council
It seems like the newest member of the UN Security Council may well be wait for it IRAN.
Every January, .. 5 new members are added to the Security Council from different regions … by election of the General Assembly of nations.
I guess this is what happens when you let the inmates run the asylum.
Iran is currently developing a nuclear weapons arsenal and is presently under some of the severest sanctions ever imposed by the UN as a result.
Iran is probably the biggest supporter of international terrorism. In addition to supporting insurgents in Iraq and manufacturing and supplying the arms and Road Side Bombs that are killing innocent Iraqi civilians and soldiers, Iran is the support base for Hamas and Hezbollah and perhaps even Al Quaeda.
In sum, Iran is probably the single greatest threat to world peace.
And let’s be blunt, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is an erratic, megalomaniacal, blowhard, …just a little south of Kim Jung Il of North Korea. Ok, so I am being kind. But what the world really needs is a higher podium from which this guy can spout his non-sensical views.
So why would the General Assembly put this country and its leadership in such a position of power? Because the General Assembly, especially the Islamic nations, will not so much be voting for Iran, … as voting against the U.S. and its allies.
The U.N. like pure socialism, is a brilliant notion. But practically, both are unworkable and solve nothing. To quote Voltaire, "Common sense is not so common".
