The Death Of Bin Laden
The assassination of Osama Bin Laden is a good thing. First in renders justice to a man who was responsible for the death of thousands of civilians around the world. Secondly it should be a signal to the world that you can run and you can hide, but you cannot get away. It may take years, but just as Israel hunted down the perpetrators of the Munich Olympics Massacre, so the US will hunt down its enemies and not be stopped by International borders. But more importantly I believe by the reaction of many in the Muslim world to his death, it will make clearer to the rest of the world who are our friends and who are our enemies.
Yes there will be protests, and flag burnings and bombings attempts. And some will succeed. But our enemies will have more of a face than before.
President Obama praised the assistance of the Pakistani government in the attack on Bin Laden. But you and I suspect that this was just international diplomacy talking and not reality.
With the death of Bin Laden, who was hiding not in the wild mountains of Afghanistan but in a mansion in a Pakistani city, we will likely see more clearly that Pakistan is not our friend but a hotbed of terrorism and fundamentalism. That the hundreds of billions we have sent to them has done nothing to diminish the animosity that many Pakistani Muslims have for the West. If we are going to spend that money, let’s spend it on our defense, not theirs.
And Egypt, where Ayman al-Zawahiri, Bin Laden’s advisor and possible successor, is from, will also likely show its new colors and I suspect that they will not be friendly to the West.
There will be marchers in the streets of many cities shouting Jihad and anointing Osama Bin Laden a martyr and there will be speeches in many Mosques around the world fomenting animosity towards the West.
The death of Osama Bin Laden is only the end of one battle. It is not the end of the war. But it will help us put a clearer face on who is the enemy and that is a good thing.
The time for political correctness is over. We should begin to call a spade a spade and an enemy an enemy. And all westerners travelling abroad must become even more vigilant and even more discerning in where we go. The time for a tour of the Pyramids or Petra is over. The next time you are asked to go through a scanner at the airport consider it a wise precaution for your safety not an invasion of your privacy.
Our foreign aid money and our tourist dollars should not be supporting countries that hate us and threaten our safety. We have been able to defeat Nazism and Communism and now we face another such challenge that we must confront if we are to survive.
