The Oil Cartel
The price of oil may soon again - reach $100 a barrel and some are predicting $200 a barrel. What will this do to a world trying to come out of the worst recession since the Great Depression? Haven’t we been held captive by OPEC long enough? Isn’t it about time we figured out how to escape their greed at our expense?
What is the solution? Decrease our dependency on oil - of course. But we don’t appear to be doing this well enough or fast enough. We haven’t found an acceptable solution to gasoline engine.
So what else can we do? We want oil. So we pay whatever arbitrary price they set. But I suggest there is a better way.
We the US, Canada, Australia, and Argentina amongst others - are the largest producers of food in the world. Why shouldn’t WE form a cartel to charge those Arab Sheiks and others a non-preferential price for what WE produce and they want. Food.
As the world’s population expands, food is becoming a more expensive commodity anyways.
If OPEC raises the price of oil or cuts production, why shouldn’t we raise the price of a bushel of wheat, and a side of beef? Instead we allow these few countries to devastate our economies while they grow rich and fat on our money and food - and then lend us back our own money.
My plan does not have to lead to any increase in domestic food prices. These oil producing countries have preferential pricing for their citizens and non-preferential pricing for the rest of us. The price of a gallon of gas in Saudia Arabia or Venezuela is just a small fraction of what we pay.
We can sit by and let others rule our destiny OR we can drastically cut our dependency on oil OR we can fight back with the thought and innovation that have made our nations great.
Isn’t about time we stopped kissing the hand of those abusing us.
